You should be … you should hear the horrible noise I’m making because of you!
;)
Seriously, though, I recommend the 10-minute Guitar Workout and Basic Guitar Workout to everyone keen to get into guitar. The clear progression of skills and understanding it delivers is better than any other teaching method I’ve tried. And I’m not just saying that cuz you’re the boss here.

Topic: Students' Union / What's it all about, then?

So would this, then, be the place for folks like me, learning and/or struggling to play guitar to share woes/triumphs/tips/tricks etc?
If so, can I just say that Mr Mead’s superb 10-Minute Guitar Workout did more than any other book to kick-start my floundering attempts to master anything more complex than single-string solos and two-chord tricks?
I can? Thankyou!
:)

Topic: General / To relic or not to relic

Hmmm, large ponder on this one. Having read my intro you shall have gathered that I’m an amateur guitar builder/refinisher. Strictly a hobbyist and never claiming to be a Luthier I have picked up some good advice, have learned many a lesson (still learning) and have made many friends over the past few years I have been refinishing & building guitars.
Being a perfectionist in everything I do I have always strived for the as new, right out of the box perfect finish, albeit they are always in the most recognisable Fender colours.
To me being a huge David Gilmour fan I had to have a Candy Apple Red and an all Black “as per the book all us Strat fans either bought or were given as Xmas pressies so we ended up with 2 ” (haven’t got round to fitting the wee pickup change over switch yet !).
Have built a Brownie, a Blackie, a Lace Sensor CAR to feed my EC adoration (all sold !). Have also dabbled with Seafoam Green, Sonic Blue, several Fiesta Reds, a Buddy Guy polka dot, Signal yellow – the list goes on.
But to get to the nitty gritty of this article, the poorly excuse was too many bits lying in the box not being used, let’s buy another body to use them up. Hence in a flash of amber nectar fuelled enthusiasm for eBay I bought a MIJ 57 RI body in Ocean Turquoise, and it had already been reliced by the previous owner !! shock horror to me, as soon as I got it I polished it (wasn’t natural relicing it was wire wool & wet and dry). Immediate thought was that as I had bought the accompanying 57 style gold anodised guard I would refinish it in the vein of DG’s 001 to complete the trio. The colour & guard grew on me and I had a new aftermarket all maple neck so it was duly fettled for the guitar & given many a coat a “aged” nitro lacquer, strictly replica 50’s logos applied.
Now it comes down to relicing the neck & all the other components. There are a lot of great services available but it all comes down to cost in the end. Ideally I would like to give the Strat to an accomplished gigging player for the next 20 years to use it relentlessly in a smoke filled auditorium (or in the pipe dream, me giving it big licks in the same scenario) then give it back to me next month, alas time travel is not available on eBay.
Therefore it has come down to me, after doing endless research on the web, solution is to hit it with concrete, small chains, bags of bolts, used coffee filters, dip the metalwork in stuff I wouldn’t even use onboard ship, make up some horrendous stain that wouldn’t even go on the fence, place fags on the e string (gave up 7 years ago, a poorly excuse to start again ) the list is endless.
Could go the easy way out and sell off all bits, bugger it, I’m gonna give it a go !!!!!!!!!!!

Topic: For Sale / Black LP Style Guitar

Was bought as a very dusty old guitar.Had never dabbled in the area of Gibson lookalikes being a diehard Strat fan so I thought I would give it a try to see what the other arf rave about.Bit of research revealed it was made by Satellite in the 70’s and was available for sale through mail order catalogues (posh name for a “clubby book” for us Scots, best pages after the bras the guitar pages were !!).The finish is original but has been given a good clean & polish.Neck is straight & plenty of life left in the frets.Pickups have been replaced with new “Zebra” items & surrounds.Wiring has been completely renewed with new pots as required & a new 3 way switch.New bell knobs fitted to complement.Back covers are original as are the strap buttons and neckplate.New Wilkinson tuners fitted.Replic G*sn logo fitted to the headstock.Check out the photos in my gear listings or go to http://www.myspace.com/gavsguitargarage to view the full album. If you can’t access myspace give me an email on gavinswadel@blueyonder.co.uk and I’ll send you the photos. Not looking for anymore than I paid for the guitar & all the new parts, needs to go to keep Mrs.S happy & free some dosh up for new builds.Check out harmonycentral for reviews which are pretty good.I’ve had a few folk giving me their wisdom (through eBay),some were downright rude, hey it looks the part & sounds great, have given an honest description & would more than welcome any try out here in the garage.Go for it !!!!!

Topic: Wanted / Unwanted,Unloved Solid Body Guitars

Always interested in any old axe that may have been lying forgotten in a corner for years (52 Tele, that sort of thing !). Seriously, if anyone has any complete or incomplete guitars no longer needed, sadly neglected, surplus to requirements, available for sale, please give me a nod. Or indeed if you require your own guitar refinished I would love to discuss that possibility too.

Topic: For Sale / Reliced Strat & Tele Parts

I have at the moment a limited stock of reliced Strat & Tele parts available for sale. These were purchased from MonsterRelic.com who are based in Singapore. Check out their website, these guys take their replicating pretty seriously !. I have used their parts on some of my most recent builds and they really look the real deal. Based on good quality gear, I’ve already paid the postage from the Far East so I can post to the UK much cheaper (and give a bit of discount on their website prices). You can check out my pics on http://www.myspace.com/gavsguitargarage
or for specific photos of what I have in stock email me on gavinswadel@blueyonder.co.uk and I’ll send you pics & prices of what I have.

Topic: For Sale / Beltona reso for sale...

I have a BRAND NEW custom spec Beltona Southerner single cone reso for sale. It was custom made for me by Steve Evans of Beltona in New Zealand – it has a composite body (very light, but looks as good as metal!) with magnetic pickup, piezo and on board blend system.
It’s a stunning guitar and beautifully made but it just doesn’t suit my style of playing…way too refiend for my slash’n’bash bottleneck! ...and I’m strictly a National man!
Serious enquiries and offers – contact me via this site or email dave@radiotones.com
Cheers!

Topic: Electric / edukayshunn

‘Frank Zappa also had the wit to realise that sitting vegging out with a geetar hoping for a creative epiphany – or vicarious knowledge by osmosis – ain’t exactly gonna get you anywhere either. What he actually said was he distrusted musical colleges, and…..’ it cuts out!
My long diatribe in reply to an article lost to mankind and the energy required to pen such a radical riposte expended for nought. OK you blackguards, I’m not going away! I hate music colleges, what they represent and the bile they turn out, is that clear? From the nazi fundametalist jazz rock widdly-widdly tutors to the play along by number style of the musos they churn out.
Watch Jools Holland fr’Chrs’sake, all the tottering old rock heros backed by an industry army of nice clean college educated middle class boys and girls without a crumb of charm or groove.
Arrgghh, switch on a BBC4 mucic documetary. OK Stax records, the MGs, music, groove, the FEEL, man. I’m better now, Steve, don’t worry. You see music doesn’t begin or end on the guitar (really???). In fact it is a fairly inconsequential plank that most of you strugglers would do better chucking away. Truth is, if you don’t sound good on a crappy guitar you aint gonna sound good on an expensive one. Have a pedal, sir? A new pick? A lower action? A vintage amp..? Makes no difference if you suck, YOU SUCK. Robert Johnson needed no pedals to entertain, think about it. Now go out, learn a song and play to entertain without the gizmos. No can do?
OK, it’s not the end of the world.
That is not to say you are un-musical, possibly quite the oposite. Maybe your calling simply lies elswhere, well outside the claustrophobic culture of that moribund 70’s corpse called rock music. This is a scum sucking industry, content to keep people going round and round in a prison bubble dedicated to perpetuating myths of heroes and fame – but in reality about corporate payola from sales of useless instruments or CDs or DVDs or T-Shirts or crappy FX & digital widgets. The music meanwhile hasn’t moved on, just decayed a little more.
So what about investing in an accordian, or a saxomophone, or a drum kit, or a set of Irish pipes? Could be good, and surely much better that just being one of zillions of clones no-hopers trying to copy what a zillion others have already done on the same boring shaped planks of wood.
There is no invention or innovation in rock music anymore – all that is similarly dead, safe, sanitised, airbrushed. Zappa RIP. At the ass end of rock Damon Edge’s unhinged industrial feedback morphed into John 5’s corpo-friendly metal glam. Where is today’s Zoot Horn Rollo or Han Reichel or even Jerry Garcia?
You see, friends, Zappa was not opposed to education, just its method and above all its lack of ambition. He was self educated, and at a high enough level to lead a legendary band while penning orchestral and chamber music, and dabbling in electronica and ballet. Does this come from watching widdly instructional DVD? No! It comes from listening well outside the narrow remit of geetar music. Ives and Varese were his poison – try also Stockhausen, Messiaen, Bach, Partch etc.. Maybe dip into world musics or jazz (Bird. Monk, Sun Ra et al) or a zillion other guitar-less forms.
OK. still need that guitar? Try those non-rock players that have/had to know what they are/were doing: Chet, Scotty Moore, James Burton, Joe Pass, Charlies Chritian, John Fahey, Lenny Breau, Django, Martin Taylor etc.
But if doubts have crept in, why not ditch the plank and get a life instead. Buy that accordian, seranade your loved one with REAL tunes the world and your mum can enjoy, and save an absolute fortune on widgets and ‘better’ guitars and the other assorted parafanalia and nonesense the rock industry wants to sell you.
PS: Just think of all the sweets, comics and lashings of ginger beer you could buy instead?
Peace, HDA

Topic: Electric / I like Anoraks

Me, I prefer quilted anoraks, preferable the Thinsulate ones that will at least not add too much bulk to the ‘obese older generation’ curves of my anti-gym / pro-food+drink flab. As for colours, well that depends on the weather. If fishing off a deserted, windswept point there is only orange. However, I am not averse to red when travelling as it enables my companions to easily find/avoid me in crowded places of mass transit.
Pre-’66 anoraks of the cheaper variety were invariably quilted on the outside, and invariably brown in my part of the world – with a fixed hood. I have a pic of me and my pal Macca at Acklington airshow in oblligatory matching brown anoraks just before I (accidentally, honest) managed to start up a towing tractor that we were sitting in at the time. Such were the adventures anoraks would inspire.
On his first visit to Newcastle I can reveal that Jimi Hendrix, famous beat combo leader of the time, bought an off-the-peg-just-in-from-Germany green anorak from a well known outdoor and mountaineering shop in town (where my Dad worked) to keep the North East cold and damp at bay. His management later ordered all photos destoyed in case they confused his fans who believed he trolled around in Carnaby Street faux-vintage militaria all the time. It was said the lyric ‘Still Raining..’ was written at this time, and legend also has it he played a third encore for devoted followers huddled around the stage while wrapped in said green anorak. Somewhere there is a pic of him fondly strumming a ‘58 Hofner Committtee while doing a medley of Slim Gaillard songs; ‘the REAL man!’, as Jimi used to say – before his management banned that particular truth as well. However, this is a B&W pic so I have no way of verifying the actual anorak colour beyond family folklore; and as my Dad was colour blind (hence his job in the aforementioned retail outlet after being quickly retired from special forces following an unfortunate ‘incident’ involving a slight mix up and live ammunition).
It was my Dad who actually sold JH the anorak, and they kept in touch. He would periodically carefully wrap in a brown paper parcel a few ounces of hand blended Black Cherry baccy and send it c/o Jimi’s mum; which Jimi used to fill the first pipe of the day with when wrapped up warm in his anorak and undertaking his morning consitutional. ‘Stout walk ne’er hurt a Soul’ is one of the many missing tracks (presumed destroyed by person or persons unknown but they know who they are) from the Electric Ladyland ‘Nashville’ sessions.
Apparently, JH never used a Strat on that cut either, and instead borrowed Chet Atkin’s Gretsch 6120 who had dropped by to discuss an ornithological article Jimi was working on at the time. Jimi was hurried back to NY by an anxious manager and never completed the article on Purple Martins, a pretty bird which had been the initial inspiration for one of his hit tunes (before his advisors mysteriously changed the title and lyric in the middle of the session).
In fact it has been rumoured that all Hendrix footage and pics are faked to keep the USA and Asian guitar industries afloat, and that the actual guitar he always used was neither a Strat nor a V but usually his favoured Hofner, Harmony, a Teisco Del Rey or a home made semi acoustic he curiously fashioned in the style of WG Grace’s infamous illegal cricket bat.
I have all this on very good authority BTW.
