Joe Pass

Bio

Joe Pass (born Joseph Anthony Passalaqua, January 13, 1929, New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S.A, died May 23, 1994), Los Angeles, California) was a jazz guitarist. His extensive use of walking basslines, melodic counterpoint during improvisation, and use of a chord-melody style of play opened up new possibilities for jazz guitar and had a profound influence on future guitarists.

Influenced by the playing of Django Rheinhardt and Charlie Parker, as early as the age of 14, Pass was gigging and travelling with small jazz groups. Falling into drug abuse in the fifties did little for his profile but a long spell in rehab saw him come back a stronger figure in the sixties, playing as a sideman to huge names such as Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan. In the 1970's, his Joe Pass Guitar Style became a must-have textbook for students of improvisational jazz.
